At the time of Domesday, our area was divided between
several Herefordshire hundreds and a Welsh area, Archenfield,
which was not part of the hundred system.
Fownhope, Brockhampton and How Caple were in Greytree
Hundred. Brampton Abbotts, Eaton (Tregoz) and Wilton were in
Bromsash Hundred. Holme Lacy was in Dinedor Hundred.
Strangford was in an odd hundred called Sellack. Within
Archenfield were Ashe Ingen, Baysham and Kings Caple.
Many places are not featured in Domesday. Apart from those
above, named places are few in
Archenfield.
Sellack only occurs as a name of the otherwise unrecorded
hundred, Sulcet - almost certainly based on the Welsh
Suluc - and the only manor there is Etone, which
pays tax in honey, the Welsh custom. In the later
Herefordshire Domesday 'Etone' is annotated 'St(ra)ngef',
likely to by Strangford, now in Sellack parish.
The Domesday hundreds are different from the later medieval
ones. Dinedore Hundred disappeared and Holme Lacy became part
of Webtree Hundred. Brampton Abbotts, Eaton (Tregoz) and
Wilton were in Greytree Hundred. The hundred of Wormelow, very
small in 1086, became the greater part of Archenfield,
although the term Archenfield continued to be used. Under the
