Project Tasks

Current Land Use

This is the recording of what land in the area is used for at the moment. Is it arable, grass, orchard etc? Much of this can be done from public roads and footpaths. Where this is not possible permission will be needed. For some parts of the study area we have maps as early as the 17th century and we have tithe maps for the whole of the area. By comparing older maps with each other and current use we will have a view of the changing agriculture and field boundaries in the area over the last two to three hundred years.

Hollow-way recording

The area has many old roads and hollow-ways, many of these have not been recorded. We would like to make a comprehensive survey of these. Currently we have covered Brampton Abbotts and are doing King's Caple and Brockhampton.

Other Tasks

We have a large collection of images of old maps, particularly tithe maps. These are being calibrated onto the OS national grid. This is done using specialised computer software which we have trained volunteers to use.

We have also carried out more specifically archaeological tasks. These included:-

field-walking - walking over newly ploughed fields looking for artefacts, collecting them and and recording their position

surveying - recording the position of earthworks

excavating
